Blogging Traffic Tips

There's a conversation going on among members of the Life, Liberty, and Property Community about good ways to drive traffic to their blogs.

Rhymes With Right has an extensive post with seven suggestions, and he links to Principled Discovery, who lists seven principles (naturally); she, in turn, links to the "Habits of Highly Effective Bloggers - Group Writing Project" at ProBlogger, as well as to her own more specific ideas at HomeSchoolBlogger.com.

I have to admit that I follow some, but not all, of Rhymes With Right's sensible suggestions. My blogging schedule is not as regular as he recommends, for instance. But I would have one technique to add to his list: submitting posts to blog carnivals. I have discovered that this is a good way to bring new readers to the blog.

In recent weeks, my posts have been linked at the Charlottesville Blog Carnival, the Virginia Blog Carnival, the Carnival of the Mundane, and the Carnival of Liberty. Last October I was linked at the Carnival of Education.

Speaking of "tips," this might not be a bad time to remind readers that donations to support this blog are always welcome, and there is a PayPal tip-jar in the left sidebar for that purpose. If you like what you see, let me know!

I'm off to my college reunion at Georgetown University in Washington, so I don't know if I'll be blogging the next few days. (Figures, I'm breaking Rhymes With Right's number one tip, "Blog daily, and at a consistent time. That gets folks into the habit of looking at your site every day." Oh, well -- at least I have an excuse this time.)

Hosting a carnival is good, too. From someone who normally gets 30-50 unique visitors, it is quite a thrill to see your statcounter jump to nearly 2000 in a single day! It's hard telling how many actual new readers might have been gained...stats are up, but there are still a lot of visitors coming in off those links.
